Making Christmas Ornaments with Kids

Christmas is a wonderful time of friends and especially family.  By making Christmas ornaments with kids you can make gifts for your friends while spending quality time with your family.  There are many different ways of making Christmas ornaments and some are very simple.  In fact, even young toddlers may be included in the Christmas ornament making process.  Here are some ideas to help stir up your creative juices and find some ornament projects to make.

Making Christmas Ornaments: Ideas

Young children will enjoy making Christmas ornaments from a variety of materials. Simple construction paper, yarn, glue, glitter, and accessories can be a playground for the designing child.  Cut out some basic shapes such as candy canes, Christmas trees, stars, and presents and your child will enjoy decorating their ornaments.  Dough ornaments are another wonderful project that the family can participate in together.  A simple dough recipe is the Salt Dough recipe.  Combine 2 Cups Flour with 2 Cups Salt and add 1 Cup Water.  Knead these ingredients together until they are pliable and dough like.  Roll out on a floured cutting board.  Children can then cut out shapes of dough with cookie cutters.  Poke a hole in the top with a toothpick and then bake the shapes in a low oven, about 200 degrees for 2-3 hours.  When the ornaments are cool, children can then paint them.

Making and Storing Christmas Ornaments

After making Christmas ornaments you will need to store them carefully so that you can enjoy them in the upcoming years. Always store your ornaments in acid free paper.  Don’t use standard tissue paper, because the dyes can seep onto your ornaments causing permanent damage.  If your child makes a lot of precious Christmas ornaments, then you may want to invest in an ornament storage case.  These cases are lined with acid free material, and can hold many ornaments.
