Dough Christmas Ornaments

Dough Christmas ornaments are fun and easy to make.  They don’t require a lot of expensive ingredients and whip up very quickly.  You can make these on your own and after painting them, cover them with an enamel coating for a very elegant look, or you can make them with children.  Either way, making Dough Christmas ornaments is a great project that everyone can participate in.

Salt Dough Christmas Ornaments

The most common dough recipe is used to make Salt Dough Christmas ornaments.  Simply combine 2 Cups of Flour, 2 Cups of Salt, and 1 Cup of water.  Knead the ingredients together until they become pliable.  You can add more water if it seems to stiff.  Some people like to add a few drops of food coloring to the dough while kneading.  There are many new vivid food colors on the market today that will greatly enhance the color of your dough.  However, don’t mix the food coloring with your bare hands or it may stain.  Use gloves or a plastic spoon.  Once the food coloring is worked through the dough, it won’t stain your hands.  You can create various ornaments by rolling the dough thin with a rolling pin and cutting shapes out with a cookie cutter.  Don’t forget to poke a hole in the top of your ornaments with a toothpick.  Bake in a low oven at 200 degrees for 2-3 hours or until the ornaments harden.  Let the ornaments cool.

Painting Dough Christmas Ornaments

This is where the fun really begins.  For an adult, you can use enamel or acrylic paints, but it is best to stay with poster paints for a young child.  Make sure that children always use non-toxic paints.  Simply paint your ornaments in your desired fashion.  After they dry, you can string them with gold metallic ribbon and hang them on the Christmas tree.
